Compact cars deliver some of the best effective range despite their small tanks. A Civic's 12.4-gallon tank paired with 32 mpg city returns over 390 miles between fill-ups — more than most drivers cover in a week of commuting. The efficiency-to-capacity ratio is where compacts win, not raw tank volume. Full-size pickups dominate the high end of the range spectrum — when properly optioned. An F-150 with the 36-gallon extended tank running 24 highway mpg covers 864 miles before the low-fuel light triggers. But these vehicles also hit the pump more often under city-driving conditions where fuel economy collapses to 15–18 mpg. A 24-gallon tank at 16 mpg city gives you only 384 miles — less than a well-driven compact.

Buyers fixate on MPG ratings and ignore tank capacity — then live with the consequences. A vehicle with a 14-gallon tank and 30 mpg combined gives you 420 miles of range. A vehicle with an 18-gallon tank and 26 mpg gives you 468 miles. The lower-MPG vehicle covers more ground per fill-up — which matters enormously if you drive rural routes or high-frequency interstate miles.
Run the numbers before you buy, not after. Just as you'd check how many amps your battery delivers before relying on a used vehicle through winter, verify tank capacity against your real driving patterns before signing any purchase agreement.
